Incredible Years

The Incredible Years (IY) Training Series comprises developmentally based programmes for parents, children and teachers.  These linked programmes aim to strengthen positive parent, teacher and child relationships and social support, in order to promote children’s social and emotional competence and school readiness and to prevent and reduce behaviour problems in young children.

At Barbour Nursery School, all staff are trained in Incredible Years techniques and children participate in “Dinosaur School” activities.  These incorporate a curriculum to strengthen social and emotional competencies, such as understanding and communicating feelings, using effective problem-solving strategies, managing anger, practicing friendship and conversational skills, and behaving appropriately in the classroom.

The “School Readiness” parent programme is offered to parents or grandparents to encourage problem-solving, guidance for home activities, ideas for child-directed play, signposting for social, emotion, persistence, and academic coaching methods, effective limit setting and pro-active discipline.
